Beyond… the cinema..

I realised recently that I never got a review posted of Star Trek Beyond. It’s a bit late now, but what the hell. I can at least post a short one.

I saw Star Trek Beyond on opening night, and the movie kept me into the story the whole time. It was very action-orientated, but it also brought the familiar Star Trek “feel” to the JJ Abrams universe Trek. That has been something that was missing from the last two movies produced by Bad Robot.

While Star Trek 2009 and Into Darkness were ok films. They didn’t really capture that Trek feel. It felt very much seperate to the rest of the franchise. While this is technically true, given the rebooted nature of them, they could have had more going for them. They tried to hard with Into Darkness, in my opinion. In the end creating a movie that had ham-fisted throwbacks to previous films that weren’t needed.

Beyond takes that and spins it in the direction that it should have headed in before. With a healthy look back at the franchise, and referencing the older series. The inclusion of Enterprise timeline fit in well. The only real downside was the inclusion of the beastie boys song for the finale. Not bad, and already established with the first movie, but it could have been done a different way.

The look and design of everything was stunning. Right down the new space station introduced in the film.

The cast looked like they were having a much better time with this film, than they had on the last. The relationship between Bones and Spock being one of the stand outs of the film.

All in a all, this was a fantastic approach to mixing the JJ universe with the style of the previous Trek. I hope it continues this way in future films.

The finale piece in respect to the old crew, was a nice touching addition to the piece and showed respect to the original crew as well as the late Leonard Nimoy.

With this I will say that, Star Trek Beyond is well worth seeing in cinema, or definitely worth the purchase on DVD\Bluray.

Live long, and Prosper..
