Don’t Breathe – Movie Review (spoiler free)

breathe

On a whim, because I was in town yesterday. I decide to go see “Don’t Breathe”. I’d seen the initial trailer, and while it wasn’t something I had been hugely waiting for, it looked interesting. It was an afternoon session, so it was fairly quiet anyway. There wasn’t a large crowd in the theatre so it was actually quite nice.

The movie went along pretty much as I expected. Standard horror fare. It doesn’t really break any new ground–although I don’t think it was trying to. The movie fell into the standard horror aspect of ‘jump scares’ which is when they try to show you something by something suddenly hitting the shot with no warning. It rarely works effectively nowadays, as it’s been used to often. It mostly comes across as cliche.

The acting was pretty strong I thought, with the girl in the movie probably being the stand out actor. ‘Rocky’ (played by Jane Levy) had the most to do in the film. Jane was actually pretty good. I hadn’t seen her in a lot of things, even her IMDB page seems like she’s fairly new still–biggest probably being Evil Dead (remake).

The other cast did pretty well with what they were given to do. Stephen Lang plays a fairly convincing blind, crazy guy. It was quite believable.

I do feel that this move, given some iffy reviews I’ve seen, probably didn’t serve a big screen debut that well. I feel like if it had just been a Netflix style horror it would have been more accepted. It also didn’t help that it was only 88 minutes long–which again makes more sense for Netflix.

In the end, if you like horror, I would recommend this but maybe once it gets to DVD\Netflix. There isn’t a huge amount that makes it worthwhile for the big screen.

Well that’s all for this one. I’d give the film about 6 stars out of 10. Enjoyable but not worth the big screen time. On a tv at home, with the lights out, and night time. Watch and decide for yourself.
